Gaming and computers play an interesting and integral role in a child’s life, especially in a generation that grew up with technology. Computers can help engage young people as makers using them in a playful and creative learning experience.
What if I disguised the educational aspect and met kids where they already are with their interests like Minecraft?
My goal throughout this process was to: consider how games can change the way we approach learning, how to Minecraft 101 for me and other coders starting out, and make learning how to code, particularly Python, more interactive.
I recreated a classroom simulation with a scavenger hunt as I wanted to implement an educational message such as growth mindset and more from what I learned as a teacher. It makes learning in a way disguised and fun as they are playing the game.
User experience helps make better games. It provides an understanding of what the real players are instead of what I think about the game. There may be gaps in the objectives, features necessary, balance, and what needs to be the focus on the game development process and game in general.
I am grateful that I am able to interact with kids three times a week and see that light bulb spark inside. Interacting with young students is also a great time to ask questions and feedback about their learning process and the game itself.
